ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Lotus pond with flowers and dragonflies, Painted with ink on handmade Japanese kozo paper. The paper has a natural off-white colour and decked edges. Both lotus flowers and dragonflies have a very rich historical and cultural background. Lotus flowers are viewed as symbols of purity, strength, resilience, and rebirth. They grow through the muddy waters, rise and float above them as beautiful, unstained flowers. Every night, they close up in the murky waters and open up with the dusk. In Buddhism, lotus symbolises the highest spiritual attainment. Dragonfly motives have been used by samurai for centuries. The beautiful "tombo" (dragonfly in Japanese) symbolise agility, determinedness and victory for samurai. In modern Japan, dragonfly patterns and images are seen on everyday items, they are seen as protectors of children, symbols of happiness and joy. In art, dragonflies are often pictured as natural inhabitants of ponds and gardens. The painting is signed, sealed with my personal seal, wet-mounted on another sheet of backing rice paper and ready to be framed or mounted on a silk scroll. Please use acid-free adhesives when framing. The painting is manually cut, please leave a few mm error margin for dimensions. Colours may differ due to differences in devices.

Canadian artist based in Malta. I studied oil painting in the South Studio Atelier in Malta. The Atelier follows the great traditions of the Florence Academy of Art, so do I. The transience of life pushes me to create, to capture the moments of beauty I see all around. I also studied Asian art, in China, Canada, and in Japan. Fragile rice paper gives a different feeling. It's the best canvas to express the complex simplicity of ink painting. I am using centuries-old Japanese recipe to mount my own artwork.
