ABOUT THE ARTWORK

From a series of works made playing with ideas of truth and lies. I looked for a historical period associated with obfuscation, and decided on piracy in the south West coast of England. Using pigments imported through the ports, or made with pigments from the earth in the area or pigments derived from materials mined in the area of the southern part of the South West Coast of England I pirated away the colours of the coast under a coat of French ultramarine ( a kaolin clay derived pigment) bot echoing the activities of the pirates who hid their booty under the sea, and calling to mind the cycling nature of truth and lies, and the idea that tides may hide but they also reveal what is beneath. this gave rise to a series of paintings containing a lot of blue, a feeling of depth and of things beneath the surface. They range in size from small to really grand and are available form the studio.Where there strata on the rock of the South West coast of England hit the sea small bays have formed in the soft rock between the bands of hard rock. These small bays were used by smugglers to hide their booty, secreting away that which they did not want to be found. This process of obfuscation is echoed in the work, with other colours sourced from the area hidden away under a surface of blue, moving like a tidal force and in the knowledge that while tides come in they also go out revealing what has been hidden beneath. In this piece the notion of revelation is to the fore with the retreating tide leaving exposed the truth beneath the waves.
