About The Artwork

Lucifer Despite its title, the subject is free will. What better testimony than the one who originated in Western literature and culture the eternal struggle between good and evil? Lucifer, namely the “bringer of light”, was first and foremost an angel, the most beautiful and powerful of all. I wanted to imagine him at this stage: when he had potentially everything at his will. It is the instant in which he makes the choice that will shape his future identity. The space is sharply divided into two, just like the angel’s soul is “torn apart” by that energy ready to reveal itself in all of its power in the immobile concentration of the moment of choice, the instant that will decide his future path. At the center of the painting there is the face of an angel, portrayed in a tile so that to suggest more its memory than its presence. It represents that which would have been, but Lucifer turns his back to it and directs his eyes the other way looking for an accomplice, almost, in the observer. The choice is made in free will.

The Minotaur wasn't that evil, in the end. The Ariadne's spool of thread from which my work unravels starts from the surrealistic and symbolist fascination with Bocklin and Dalì. While unwinding the thread Mondrian's abstract experience and Burri's are also picked up while the geniuses Leonardo and Michelangelo remain the center of the labyrinth.
