ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is part of a series of works inspired by fashion photography. It shows two opposing figures. Visually they complement one another; the absence of colour in one contrasting with the rich colours of the other, as well as the focus on the individual (figure on the left) alongside the clothes (figure on the right). Watercolour, pencil and pen on 300gsm watercolour paper (50 x 70 cm). The watercolour is framed (dark brown frame and Artglass AR70 anti-reflective glass) and ready to hang. Total dimensions with frame are as described in the dimensions section.

I am a Portuguese-British artist living in London. After finishing my Master’s degree in architecture I studied painting at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisboa, Portugal. Watercolour has become my preferred medium: for the richness of the colours, the instant results and how unforgiving it can be. Watercolour exposes any error and for me this adds to the challenge - and the joy - when it can lead to something unexpected. Fashion, a lifelong passion, inspires my work. From the motion and dynamism of classic runway to timeless fashion photoshoots, I represent these images using a vibrant palette. My Portuguese heritage exercises a powerful parallel influence. Traditional azulejos (Portuguese glazed tiles) are a key source of inspiration, for their patterns, geometry and composition. These influences and passions are combined with my attention to detail and precision, borne from years as a practising architect. The beauty of the clothes and tiles of her paintings contrast with the stark and clinical geometric negative spaces, reminiscent of architectural drawings and blueprints.
