William Marlow enjoyed a career designing gardens in San Francisco, before relocating to Weaverville. He owns and operates Weaverville Antiques and pursues his art, painting in oils. His expressionistic landscapes and abstracts represent "a remembered emotion." There is a kind of painting that occurs when emotion takes the brush. The painter knows when the subconscious painter steps in, sometimes in the third, fourth or fifth start. The process takes over the plan. Until then everything is practice, necessary preparation. The composition develops out of subconscious reality. The two painters work together. One begins. The other creates. Paul Cezanne said, "I don't paint trees. I paint pictures." Such a picture must not imitate reality if it is to have a life of its own. The picture is the paint. If it holds the feeling, it succeeds, and the picture carries. Dealing in antiques affords the the opportunity to study and collect good design. He continues to learn from his own collections.
