When the idea comes from a memory (to paint a picture), I often search for or take a photo myself. It helps me to create a visual mental image. By working on a series of paintings at the same time, I create for myself the chance to experiment on the canvas with the paint, composition and balance. The paintings I have created, I will then decide whether to keep the image or start again and repaint all or part of the canvas.
