ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I had always thought that my friend had a good face and so I set about getting a painting done of him. At the time of painting he had a life threatening cancer and was facing a serious operation. I can't believe how ill he looked. Thankfully he is now recovered and setting the town alight, at the time things were very much in the balance and I think this does come through in my portrait.

I have always drawn and painted figuratively, sometimes varying my style to let the medium speak, but always following the same path. My aim is to express the gentle shock of otherness and the strange life of people and things. I am influenced by my upbringing in a coastal town, my experience of disability, and by the figurative tradition from Caravaggio through Vermeer to Spencer and Freud.
