A lot of inspirational ideas can come being spontaneous, transitional or culminate from seeing something that warms up any reception. This oil painting is probably a little of all these three notions and nature really can be a spur. For the past few years, some green plants happen to regrow every spring on the rustic stone wall in my backyard. In particular, there is this group of plants that look as if they are climbing one after the other in unison in a serpentine way that inspired me to paint ‘Meandering to the Sun’. It is not that often that I paint these kind of images, but there was this strong lure from seeing it every day, that I had to give it a go. There are some special circumstances at times that I almost cannot say no and this was one of them. It wasn’t only the beautiful, almost vitrifying sun kissed leaves, resembling something like stained glass that got me, but also the fascination of nature’s life cycle itself. From seemingly almost nothing from within the cracks of the wall, it is as if they awaken with life’s elements. With some moist and warm light sunrays, they get life breathed into them, so to speak. From a seemingly difficult place to cultivate, they defy odds and gravity, seeking the sun, striving for life. After their time and a warmer climate, they also wither away, but not necessarily being the end of all. I found the entire image inspiring to me and somewhat spiritual at the same time. I saw the struggle for life in it and it can be that way. However, they were reaching out for the sun, reaching out for the light, which keeps them going. I suppose there has to be a light for us to keep going too. As for the painting itself, it was painted on a fine weave, gallery wrapped stretched canvas. All four sides are also painted in a mottled way with the same colours as on the front, which is a continuation of the painting, making it entire. This was done with the intention of the painting looking suitable frameless, or having a frame.

Jason is a painter and illustrator of various styles and different media for different ends. Principally a surrealistic and abstract artist, he has a fondness for satire and caricature, with a hint of humour fantasy and the whimsical. Nevertheless, there is a realistic and a sober aspect to some of his work too. His different genres of works are ongoing series which are added to from time to time, whether it is his Aviary, Abstract, Allegoric or any other style he employs. World events, social affairs and politics draw his attention, but he can be inspired by everything and anything seen, heard or felt. His expression can be direct or ambiguous. What is prevalent throughout his work is light, movement and flow, hardly any black is employed, leaning towards enlightenment.
