ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This work is inspired by Pieter Claesz's Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill. It is a more expressionist interpretation of the memento mori motif, or the vanitas theme, which is meant to provoke contemplation of our own mortality and the crippling fear of death. By engaging with such a theme, both the viewer and the artist may experience an almost cathartic effect. The piece is painted on a round wooden panel with a diameter of 14 cm, which creates an interesting composition.
