‘Minerva’- unlike her Roman counterpart, was born from a chilly day in the south of France last Christmas. While driving along the South Coast of France, we stopped the car and jumped out to take photographs of the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen. It felt almost like fate, not in some miraculous biblical sense, just a set of small actions that lead me to that exact spot, with those exact rocks, and foamy sea that glistened with light. It truly was the most perfect timing. Capturing photographs on my phone, I knew it right then, this was going to be the first piece of 2020. We returned home that evening and I sketched out a watercolour study and instead of deterring me, it brought me even more satisfaction and confirmed that Minerva was going to be my first painting of the year. Her journey was not a simple one; she's taken five weeks of full time work. There have been times filled with frustration and doubt, but even in that darkness, there’s also pure and wholesome joy when at last everything seems to come together. I am completely in love with this piece and hope she finds a perfect home. I have wanted to focus more on large paintings for quite some time now, and so this year is dedicated to them. I wanted to take my time with them, grow with them, and make as many mistakes as possible pursuing the vision I have in my mind. Each piece in 2020 will be released alongside some of their studies and as limited edition prints. 'Minerva' is framed in a simple black floating frame. She is 100x80cm oil on premium cotton canvas. Signed and varnished.

My work focuses on storms and the light we find within them. I paint intimate and real scenes that invite the viewer to look closer and embrace the darkness. The darkness is something that most shy away from but for me there is nothing more comforting than a storm creating chaos- after all there can be no darkness without light. My work has evolved from painting the sea as a subject to painting it as a person; historically boats were named after women and it felt fitting for me to adopt the same practice. Each painting is personified and named after women, whether they’re a historical figure or simply a strong woman who altered my life in some way. My paintings include stormy skies and rocky shore lines. I leave the edges unfinished in order to create the illusion of hazy memories. Within each I try to portray the subtle lighting, tones and mood of each seascape creating powerful emotions for the viewer.
