About The Artwork

This is a series of 5 drawings on Arches Oil Paper. They are mixed media including oil paint, charcoal, pastel, chalk and pencil. Please note clip holding up painting in photo. dark areas go to the edge. Piece is photographed on a white wall. My drawings are a more expressive outlet for my interests around the subconcious, emotions and spiritual ritual. The title, 'Mono' comes from 'Mono no aware' literally "the pathos of things", and also translated as"a sensitivity to ephemera", is a Japanese term for the awareness of impermanence or transience of things. Please note all the drawings are unframed (framed version shown is a photoshopped mock up) and will be shipped laid flat.

I like to say that I paint ‘The Edge of The Rainbow’. The term comes from Donna Tartt’s novel, The Goldfinch as she describes a space that sits just beyond reality, where all beauty, magic and art exists. My paintings are an attempt to conjure this space, to break through this reality and try and grasp what lies just beyond what we can see. Its a place that is blurry, shimmering and impossible to capture. In practice, I use layers and layers of thin, runny oil paint to create glowing glazes of colour that vibrate and change in the light. As I apply each translucent layer I like to imagine that light and air is caught within the painting, allowing it to breathe and come alive.
