A visit to the beautiful Monterey Peninsula just isn't complete without a rendezvous with Old Fisherman's Wharf. Thousands of visitors enjoy the Wharf's many fine restaurants, gift shops, art galleries, whale watching and fishing trips. This is a great place to take in the sights, sounds and smells of Monterey, and I like visiting it often. I spot the masts of sailboats behind the piers, sea lions and otters frolicking in the calm inner harbor waters, boats coming in and out of the harbor. I like observing the reflections in the water – how they move and break on the waves, how the colors of the water itself and the sky effect the color of reflections. In this painting, I wanted to have your eye follow the off-white stumps through colorful waters of the harbor, leading you to a focal point - red and green shacks on the distant pier. Red and green are complementary colors. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast and reinforce each other, and can create some striking optical effects. To create the overall atmospheric harmony in a painting is very important for me. There was a beautiful pink haze above the distant mountains, and higher above, the sky had delicate blues and greens, which reflected into the waters below, creating colorful waves. Having blues, pinks and greens both in the sky and in the water, helps to create a harmonious effect. There is harmony in nature, and I make every effort to bring it into a painting. Signature member of American Impressionist Society (AIS),Signature Member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA); and an Artist Member of California Art Club (CAC). All my childhood and youth I lived and breathed music. The transition from playing piano to transferring this inner music on canvas with oil paint happened later in life. I see my art as visual music. I try to bring it to life with harmonious colors, which emanate joy and peace. I infuse each of my brush strokes with its own kind of melody. My hope is that the viewers will hear the sounds and rhythms of that music as they look at my work, and it will generate the same emotions and connections that I had when painting that piece. I am inspired by the way light shapes the landscape, and I strive to capture it on canvas. I often paint en plein air (on location), which allows me to use all my senses to interpret a scene in front of me with a sense of immediacy and honesty. I choose to paint in oils, because I love their robust quality of bright, luminous colors, which are easily bendable and capable of retaining texture and showing brushstrokes. My favorite starting point for the landscape painting is the golden light of late afternoon, known as the “magic hour”, which creates the most intriguing and fascinating effects by merging captivating shadow patterns and warm, luminous color of the setting sun.
