Mother of Icarus Painting

I chose Icarus (a timeless symbol of the inflated ego) to reflect upon the shortcomings of western democracy. Icarus also embodies the disillusioned unknown individual, overwhelmed by the continuous waves of fashionable goods which rapidly transform into waste. This old woman figure is quite a familiar character in the everyday life of the Romanians: you could see her as a beggar in the city and also as a common respectable village grandmother. I also see her as a vulnerable Mary by her son's cross, the patient witness to the errors and success of the contemporary young man in a less developed country, she is the feminine protective and creative energy as a source of hope.
