Motown III: Diamond Painting

I titled these series Motown as that is what I listened to when I was painting these-upbeat, nostalgic and classic all at once. This series of watercolor paintings were inspired by my study of textiles from South America, Africa and Asia. Some of the shapes come from African Shoowa textiles, others from memories of patterns I've loved over the years. The modern twist was to do the pieces in complementary colors, and not to have two of the same colors abut one another. Another twist was to start off with a basic geometric shape (ie:square, circle, triangle) as an anchoring base, always in lapis blue and sunshine yellow. Applying the work to a birch plywood board and metal leafing it replaced a frame, and varnishing and waxing negated the need for glass, so my watercolors can be up close and personal.
