Gerrit Goss was born in London, England and was raised on Sanibel Island, Florida. He was interested in art from a young age, and, in high school, he began studying art history as well as painting and other visual arts. During college, Gerrit studied abroad in Florence, Italy, which- through exposure to renaissance palaces and gardens- sparked his interest in the profession of landscape architecture. He graduated from Rollins College with a BA in Art History and immediately pursued a career in landscape architecture, believing it to be a good balance between his love of the outdoors and his love of design. Gerrit graduated from the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture with his Master of Landscape Architecture degree in 1997. During his career as a landscape architect, first in New York City with Robert A. M. Stern Architects and Madison Cox Design and later in Los Angeles with EDSA, Gerrit maintained oil painting as a hobby, taking painting classes at local colleges and painting on weekends and other spare moments. In 2017, Gerrit started painting full time. Gerrit’s artwork has always been greatly inspired by the coastal imagery of his youth in Florida, his summers in Long Island Sound, and his current home in Los Angeles. Much of the work could be characterized as abstract/ atmospheric seascapes and landscapes, with emphasis on capturing the constantly changing- sometimes serene and sometimes quite animated- distant horizons. His canvases vary in scale and the larger works are in the range of up to 4’x6’. You can see more of Gerrit’s work at and on Instagram @ gerritgossart.
