About The Artwork
At Mt Lees, a few miles from my home, there is a private garden that was gifted to the public. It's in a valley, and there is a good variety of exotic planting there. It's a lovely place to walk. The rich color in this painting comes from a colored underpainting overlaid with charcoal, which allows me to darken the image considerably without losing the chromatic aspect.

Paul Lyons is a New Zealand artist working in watercolour.
He uses a variety of techniques to achieve the unusually rich, dark colours and textures that characterise many of his watercolours, and his paintings often include layers of collaged Japanese rice paper or gouache.
He has exhibited in various galleries, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his paintings hang in collections throughout New Zealand and in America and Britain.
The paintings are all watercolours executed with archival-quality materials (100% rag paper and paints with a lightfastness rating of A or AA).
