About The Artwork

Our modern understanding of light and colour begins with Isaac Newton (1642-1726) and a series of experiments that he publishes in 1672. He is the first to understand the rainbow — he refracts white light with a prism, resolving it into its component colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. Oil over tempera on plywood panels. No.8 in a series of 21 paintings entitled 'Murmurations'. Each painting has a different perimeter shape based on a formula for which there are 21 solutions.

Nature derives a strength and economy of form from geometry, its patterns are observed everywhere in the natural world, from molecular structures to planetary systems. In contemplating the interrelationships of planes and colour I find that the universal language of geometry and mathematics provide me with a set of rules or guiding principles.
