NZ Bush Painting

In using the physical medium of painting to re-create an abstracted world view, my work carries on a tradition that emanated over 60 years ago, representing an abstractionist, gestural movement encapsulating the physical act of putting daubs and marks onto a surface. In my work I utilise paint, wax, pigments and charcoal as metaphorical vehicles for memory and impression. Paintings are grounded on a structure that creates order from chaos, where art and nature are territorialized into constructed planes of cohesion. The work develops by crossing geographic and time barriers, generating a window into a small space of chaos within chaos, where chaos can be elaborated, felt, thought. Given today’s fast-moving world of digital mass media, iPad art-making and other devices such as 3D printing, to hold a stick of charcoal or a brush and make a sweeping ‘felt’ line is tremendously satisfying, an in-the-moment experience. Like a new musical composition, there is absolutely no replication of what has gone before.
