Nearly Nightfall explores light through darkness and stillness through movement. The tiny amounts of warm brights that peek through the illuminated green layer speak loudly in a balanced way. This painting evokes the most satisfying moments of dusk. Kale Baker’s process begins with walks and runs through the bog near her home in Newton, NH. Baker’s paintings mirror the tunnel vision state of mind that physical activity creates through spontaneous actions involving mark making and gesture. Her work evokes the feeling of being present through movement and also references the passing of time. The surface of the works are layered, physical and subtracted. Subtle and abrupt transitions between hard edge and atmosphere suggest the hazy line of clarity between internal and external awareness. These paintings seek stillness through movement, providing a sense of wholeness in the combination of their parts. Making these works has allowed Baker to relive the pain and excitement of the sometimes crushing weight of life. These paintings do not aim to represent imagery from the bog near her home, but an internal landscape of learning to cope with the holes that the happenings of life can present. This painting includes a hanging wire attached to the back This painting is signed and dated on the back
