This artwork is part of an ongoing series of studio interiors, the latest version of which have been made during the ‘lockdown’ periods in 2021/21. I did a large number of studio studies at this time to investigate and explore ideas to develop my process. They have been heavily influenced by lots of drawing studies made from other interiors and works from Richard Diebenkorn and Edward Hopper in particular. I like to feature a focal point in my compostions- often a chair or in this case, an easel and manakin. These are abundent in the art school at the moment and provide a haunting reminder of other people inside a room!!!

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand.
