About The Artwork

Edinburgh. Scotland's Capital City. Home of Scottish Parliament and seat of the Scottish Monarchy. Birthplace of Harry Potter (the novels not the actual character). It also happens to be one of my favorite cities. Amazing views, great food, streets full of life. I have been there three times. Twice for the golf and once just for the city, although I still played golf. Painting a nightscape of Edinburgh presented two different challenges. First, how to include all the detail that exists in the architecture. Every building is so rich with detail, where is the correct mixture of too much and too little in the composition. Second, how do I handle the giant dark green space that separates the Royal Mile from the "younger" New Town, began in the late 1700's. Green space, without any light on it and night, is just black. In my other nightscape pieces, the black and white balance each other out. Cities have a way of doing this naturally. In this piece, both the park and the hill that the castle sits on, create an unnatural balance with the black in the middle of the painting. Conventual wisdom says the subject of your work should be in the center. Then again Edinburgh is anything but conventual. And that is what makes it so special.

Grew up in Detroit, spent 18 years in Columbus, Ohio, lived abroad outside London, UK, and now live in the metro Chicago area. Always drawing, I learned to paint in high school with a focus in watercolor. With a landscape architecture degree from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Capital University, I put my abilities to work in designing and constructing golf courses and countless gardens. Eventually I transitioned into creating marketing campaigns for a major US insurance carrier. I began painting again a few years back to help encourage my children’s creativity. When my family was given the opportunity to move outside London, I decided it was time to take my work public. My work is inspired by my experiences. More importantly, I am trying to share those experiences through my work. While in receiving my Landscape Architecture degree, I learned to design using the genius loci, or spirit of place. I want that spirit to come out in my art. The choice of subjects is based on a passion for my interests. I work in many different mediums and styles. I love the challenge of trying something new, which is reflected in the diversity of work.
