My work exploits the conventions of cinematography by using close-ups, heavy cropping and saturated colour or strong lighting to create atmosphere; added to this is a gestural paint technique giving movement and immediacy to the image.

This piece is from a series of paintings focusing on female lead characters from European crime dramas. These are women who are strong, dominant and seemingly aloof, routinely cast as unable to form lasting relationships and for whom a private life and a work life are at odds (an issue rarely touched on in male character leads). They are fascinating, flawed, avowedly anti-feminine subjects; subjects who refuse objectification. I hope to capture a moment, a gesture, an expression that conveys some of their pragmatism and turmoil and also their strength and beauty.

This painting is oil on linen canvas (deep edge) stretched, and comes with hanging fixings.

Sal Jones

United Kingdom

Working primarily with oil paint on canvas Sal’s fascination with painting focuses on our relationship with representation; particularly with regard to human expression and communication. Her emotionally charged paintings, portraying, primarily, fictional subjects, capture the action of expression out of context whilst transforming the stereotypical portrait. Using subjects that she has sourced from cinema, the media and her own photography she creates works that explore human reaction and empathy on a personal level. Her work investigates our love of the dramatic, focusing on scenes of questioning, love, betrayal, and power-play; along with titles originating from dialogue, they invite the viewer to share and empathise with this inner world of familiar strangers. The painted surface draws attention to the process of painting and to the artist’s choices in transforming the photographic source image. Sal has a BA Hons in Fine Art and a PGCE in Art & Design, she lives and works in London. Sal has over 20 years of experience working in the education sector teaching and undertaking art residencies and is currently a freelance Artist, Museum educator, tutor and exam board Assessment Associate. Sal has exhibited widely in London and the UK, and has had two solo shows in the last two years in Herts and London. Her work is held in private collections in the UK and internationally.
