Son nom provient de la locution anglaise picture element, qui signifie « élément d'image ». « La célèbre brique de Lego à été crée il y a presque un siècle, mais les fabriquants n’avaient vraisemblablement pas penser au pixel à cette époque. Aujourd’hui, c’est pour moi un moyen de fabriquer physiquement une image numérique que j’ai, au préalable ; retravaillé, redimensionné, modifié, détourné, customisé, … afin de me l’approprier.
