About The Artwork
Portrait of an ostrich. (Struthio camelus) Since early childhood - in fact as far as I can remember - I have spontaneously been fascinated by eyes, in all their different shapes, colours and sizes. This fierce bird, with it's majestic, muscular neck, pierces his gaze straight into the pupils of the observer. Silently, this mighty individual communicates: ''Don't you dare to challenge my dominance. Or I will chase you at 43 mph...'' Ostrichs live in nomadic groups of 5 up to 50 birds. When threatened, the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or run away. The painting comes without a frame. I always paint the sides of the work, so that the scene carries over to the edges. This way there is the option of not framing. I also wire my paintings. Thus, the work is totally finished and ready to hang.
