ABOUT THE ARTWORK
On a personal note, the idea of coming into the light, emerging from a state of being lost is a topic I think about a lot. Finding refreshment, a moment, a breath, a smile, serenity... that makes a difference in our lives. My series was inspired by this experience. Working on a black canvas makes you think. The way I build up form is different. The shadows are already there in the form of the black, so my focus is highlight and midtones. It's been a beautiful project in experimentation.

Hi, I'm Esther, a studio painter from Trinidad, in the Caribbean. Oil painting is my passion. I enjoy exploring the visual language of colour and form. I am drawn to earth's landforms and geomorphology; this inspires my expressive mark making and unconventional application of media, in order to obtain unpredictable and exciting results. My paintings are usually portraits where hyper realism is juxtaposed against the abstract. The colours are vibrant and expressive; I build up layer upon layer, with rich results.
