ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This tahitian man is peeling a breadfruit, after it has cooked on the fire the skin becomes charcoal, and it is removed and set on a bed of "burao" (wild hisbiscus) leaves, to be eaten usually with fresh squeezed coconut milk. Traditionally breadfruit accompanies most meals, along with other root vegetables and cooked bananas and doused with a thickened coconut sauce. I painted this on a linen canvas with a transparent "ground" so the neutral beige tone of the linen runs through the painting giving it a lovely unifying effect. Heiarii is often a model for my paintings, his nonchalent Tahitian lifestyle lends itself well to being a "muse"!
