Oil on board using the palette knife to create a raised impasto texture. Strong colour and contrast help to generate the energy and movement of the racehorses as they gallop to the finish. The palette knife layers and moves the paint with the momentum and energy of the moment.

In this painting I wanted to focus on how each racer (both horse and jockey) in the steeplechase is in their own individual world that yet runs parallel to the other racers in the event. We as viewers see them altogether in the one race, but they are each in their own moment of focus, energy, effort, danger and maybe triumph! I hope to convey this to the viewers.

I grew up with horses, and live near the Killarney racecourse in Ireland, so horses have always fascinated and inspired me.
