'Planning Ahead IV' is about the idea of work is diverse but always closely linked to process and understanding of materials including their history and connection to culture.I work intuitively, currently I am exploring ancient method of organic sugar fermentation Indigo and the consequent resonance in historical culture. The fermentation vat is ‘alive’ ,cannot be hurried, the microbes need time to do the work and over time ‘feeding’ the vat is necessary to continue the process. Indigo is an extraordinary plant whose extract turns yellow/green when in water and blue when exposed to air. Indigo popular for more than 4000 years is still used . I think of the millions of blue jeans worn everyday. I studied indigo in Japan, the painstaking dyeing techniques of Shibori, folding, tying, wrapping and Roketsuzome a Japanese form of wax-resit dying. A ancient colour and a ancient universe is the perfect subject that captivates me. The paper I use is archival fine washi ( Japanese paper) and I recommend framing in a fine box type frame with museum quality glass as this allows the edges to show which are a beautiful feature of the work and gives UV protection too.

Exhibiting international and national award winning artist who practice also includes commission for commercial as well as private collectors. Creative artist making meaningful inspiriting poetic art to cherish.Indigo because it colours everything, all emotion, our fragile planet, our universe. Madder is the colour of open flesh, wounds and healing, love and heartbreak" Indigo, 6000 years of historical importance that continues to inspires me. I make my own non-toxic fermentation indigo vats using century old recipe, plant dyes and pigments from the Earth on washi, wool, silk, this contrasted with industrial materials- cast iron, steel, concrete, engages me in a dialogue that creates a deeper connectedness to being. The tension of light, ephemeral and heavy dark industry produces a emotional experience. I find the dust and grime ingrained surfaces, when the edges worn with layers of time, muted colours greyed into man made materials. The experience of being in a rivers current and looking up through the heavy deep grey black blue sky to a ray light reflecting back.
