About The Artwork

The relationship between the organic and the inorganic in my still life paintings addresses the topic of the Anthropocene. It is looking at still life in a new way. Looking at a plastic painting through the framework of vanitas still life. You see something so simple and average but like Sparnaay and Ruych, I have painted them on a large scale changing the status of the norm. They are transformed into a monumental state forcing the viewer to look a different way and to denote, that it’s much more than just your average objects. Still life will always exist. It is how the artist translates that still life into a social construct and meaning of the contemporary world. The modern world is abundant in advertising imagery absent in the 16th - 17th century era. We are so saturated by it that we are desensitised. But still life paintings asks us to consider the world in an alternate way and to pose questions about the material world that we have created. In a way helping us explore our relationship with the material world that surrounds us. One thing we know about still life is that life in general is anything but still, it dynamic, it’s moving its constantly shifting. Still life asks us to rest a particular moment and to look closely to observe and that is something we are not used to doing anymore because the novelty has such prestige, change has such prestige. We are constantly asking what’s new, what’s different. Still life asks us to look at the overlooked, the familiar and to discover depths within. We speak of ourselves as a materialistic society but we don’t take the option to study it. How to appreciate the beauty and complexity of an object. Also using photography as an underling starter for composition and use of stark light and dark values. It’s not just coffee, it’s the epidemic in Ireland with the unable choice of recycling these objects due to a manmade element preventing recycling thus resulting in mass wastage thrown in landfills effecting the environment. It’s not just water, it’s the relationship between an organic matter that has been portrayed in still life for centuries but in this period of time the human element that is the normal plastic, is something sinister that is one of the biggest pollutants on this planet.

Loushi is a Limerick based Visual artist has just recently finished a BA Degree in Fine Art Painting at the Limerick School Of Art and Design, gaining an Honors Degree. She has showcased in exhibitions Ireland and also internationally, from Rome to the USA. The painting medium of choice is oil paints as the pigment is richer and more vivid than other mediums in which they cannot compete with the quality of the oil paints. Old master techniques are used for example grisialle and chiaroscuaro to create moody and dramatic still life compositions.
