About The Artwork

"Playground of Color" captures the essence of simplicity and the beauty of random arrangements. At the heart of this original oil painting is a love for color, space and time. With a mix of vintage and contemporary items the painting incorporates a feeling of celebration. Bright, clear colors, geometric shapes and hints of floral patterning unite in a unique and unexpected way. The painting has a stained-glass like influence with strong lines being used to capture the silhouettes of each object, including the cast shadows which take on a form of their own in the composition. The palette is luminous with lots of white, cream and light blue which become a foundation to touches of brilliant orange, yellow and red. In creating this painting, I was influenced by the need to capture the heart of each object on the table and to view all the things that were happening (including shadows) as equal in terms of their representation in the piece. I painted this on a masonite panel in oils. This is a signed original that is ready for framing.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
