Art Description

Painting: Oil on Wood.

Spring has arrived in Florence after a long period of cold and rainy days. The colors of this Renaissance basin are transforming, the days are getting longer, the light is stronger, warmer, and signs of life and rebirth are popping up all around us. My favorite spring flower is the poppy, and I have been painting it for as long as I can remember. This flower, for me, with its vivacious red color exuding passion and energy, represents the springtime. I have tried to put in as much dynamism as possible, all the while communicating the weightlessness and delicacy of these poppies. As I often do in my still life paintings(see “Composition on with Pink Roses”), I like to leave in a symbol representing the artist. Here I have chosen a bottle of linseed oil. It isn’t a material I use in my painting, however the tradition linseed oil represents in the history of oil painting reflects one aspect of myself and my works. My formation as an artist began in goldsmith workshops, much like the formation of Renaissance artists. My interest has always been art as a craft, aware of the past behind us that makes me a contemporary man, however interested in reality as symbolic and non-representational. To quote Morandi, “there is nothing as abstract as reality”.
