When thinking about archaeological sites, we tend to conceive of them as dead silent – empty ruins left by past cultures. But this isn’t how the people who lived there in the past and used these sites would have experienced them. Often, I resonate with such experiences when I visit such ancient sites of the world. Residents would have heard others speaking and laughing, babies crying, people working, dogs barking and music such as drumming. These sounds could be heard from close by and perhaps coming from distant locations as well. This painting is my intuitive abstraction of the places.

Nalin A Indrasena is a contemporary artist who works in cold wax and oil mixed media. Nalin has studied pre-classical and classical Western art, guided by Nalini Silva, his aunt, and a well-respected art teacher in Sri Lanka. During his career as a technologist with the United Nations, his travels to numerous war-stricken countries allowed him to witness their historical legacies through what remains as ruins and artifacts organically evolved. He responded to such experiences with intense curiosity and visionary inspiration. Nalin started painting his abstract experiences of what he saw and remembered of those places. Being passionate about abstract expressionism, Nalin uses cold wax to bring out extraordinary energy from his mind in the form and content of his paintings, as well as the layers that are activated on the surfaces that can be scratched back to uncover historical layers and perspectives. Cold wax and oil paint bring out unusual textures, expressions, and surface subtleties and offer the possibility of painting contrasting markings and working with aberrations on the painted surface itself. Having worked in a variety of media since childhood, he found that cold wax and oil mixture is undoubtedly an exciting painting medium that he has now embraced to work with. His work has been exhibited at the Barefoot Gallery (Colombo- Sri Lanka), Iraq, and Croatia. Nalin is planning to exhibit his new work in Geneva, Switzerland. His work has been acquired by private collectors in Malaysia, Australia, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Kenya, and the USA. Member of the Cold Wax Academy, USA Member of the Encaustic Art Institute, USA MY STATEMENT I am always fascinated by historical places and monuments I have seen around the world during my travels and work. I have always been curious to learn about the cultures surrounding such places and the unspoken stories told through walls decayed or beaten up through weathering over time. The transformation of decay and the destruction of surfaces over the centuries inspired me to express my emotional response to them through my paintings. By doing so, I intend to connect with and elicit deep personal feelings from the viewer while also creating a sense of curiosity. Using oil paint and cold wax with mixed media, I selectively reduce the surface of my painting to reveal hidden layers to evoke a sense of fragility, depth, and history.
