Driving back to Palmerston North, late one afternoon, we took a bit of a detour off the main road, through Rangiwahia. The road climbed up into the hills, and we were able to see across the plains, sighting both Mt. Ruapehu and Mt. Taranaki through the clear air. Round the next corner, there was an abandoned, ruined hut silhouetted against the sunset. Having spent the previous ten minutes taking photos of the mountains, we had to stop again and record the sight of the hut with the sky light shining right through it. Some authorities say you must not use black in a painting, because it just looks like a hole in the paper. I generally counter that by saying it only looks like a black hole if it doesn't blend with other dark areas in the painting, because THEY aren't dark enough. Well, there aren't any other dark areas in the rest of this painting so in this case, I suppose that question doesn't arise.
