Reader #79 is part of a series of depicting the female figure reading. I use subdued colors and loose brush strokes, as in most of my paintings, in order to create the mood and feel of an urban setting. Art buyers may see a symbolic reference to prominent 20th century American painters like George Bellows, John Sloan, Isabell Bishop, and Edward Hopper. This artwork is currently for sale and if you would like to proceed with a secure purchase, please click on the buy artwork button below. All of my paintings are done on natural birch panel which has been treated to prevent warping and last a lifetime. 12 x 16 original Urban Realism oil painting on panel by Darren Thompson. Before I became a painter I spent 15 years honing my skills in the field of illustration. Doing editorial work for various publications. I began to transition to fine art in 2003. At that time I rented studio space to a great painter named C.W. Mundy. It was a great learning experience to have someone of his caliber right down the hall. I learned quite a bit which leads me to where I am today. My paintings are urban scenes taken from here in Chicago. I also use my art skills in the classroom as well. I use it as a visual aid for teaching students in special education for the Chicago Public Schools.
