This painting was inspired by walking in the UK countryside in the summer time and looking out over the land from up high on the moors in Cornwall into the distance. The painting pulls you up into the sky - which is bright blue with large clouds overhead. The title of the painting comes from a bird of prey called a Red Kite. The UK is home to about 7 per cent of the world's population of breeding pairs. The bird makes a shrill whistling sound and can be heard calling from where it soars on air currents up high. I could hear this bird calling whilst I worked in my studio in Hertfordshire so the painting in my mind is a bridge between two places - Cornwall and Hertfordshire. I hope that viewers will be transported into their own recollections of wide open spaces, be uplifted and get a sense of joy and peace at the same time. This painting is ink and traditional gesso ground on birch ply with an aluminium subframe. All the materials used to make the painting are of the highest quality and purchased from reputable suppliers.

I am inspired by light, land, sky, and weather. The paintings are amalgamations of journeys taken on foot by running and walking. They describe and communicate physical, emotional and visual experiences of landscape. I typically emphasise the sky and remove signs of human habitation. By doing this I hope to offer you space to breathe and be, to be immersed or uplifted, to connect with your own memories of landscape. The paintings are made using a traditional gesso ground on birch or poplar. I prepare the gesso surface over a number of days. When I am ready to make a painting, I create texture by painting with the gesso and carving into the surface with wire wool, sandpaper and wood carving tools. Next I work with high quality light fast acrylic inks and push the pigment into the surfaces I have created. Alex has exhibited widely in the UK, working regularly with The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art. She has work in private collections in France, Germany, Norway, the USA, Japan and the UK.
