As a relatively recent addition to the planet, we as humans are overwhelmingly conducive to the destruction of the environment and bare a stark lack of respect for its occupants. This estrangement from nature has had a severe impact on wildlife, inducing a mass extinction of species on a global scale. In the British Isles this can be observed by the disappearance of 14 major types of mammals and birds. These animals are an appropriate constituency to represent as they have no voice of their own. This work is an attempt to immortalize them, in a modern culture that will never witness their magnificence in true colour.

Featured in exhibitions:
2019 - GOMA 3rd Annual Members Exhibition, Gallery Of Modern Art, Lombard Street, Waterford, Ireland (13th December 2018 to 13th January);
2018 - Emerging Artists, Bils & Rye, 5 Market Place, Kirkbymoorside, York, UK (1st September to 2nd November);

The prevailing theme in the work of multidisciplinary visual artist Katrīna Tračuma is humankind’s estrangement from nature, as viewed through the lens of our relationships with other species. An innate tendency of humans to anthropomorphize fellow animals and the psychology behind that tendency also informs the work. This dysfunctional kinship is explored through different materials and mediums, with a primary focus on painting. Using bright pigments and striking colour combinations to draw attention to this matter in an engaging way, bold brushstrokes are balanced with intricate details in a language of symbolic imagery and metaphors.
