I've been painting borderline abstract expressionistic paintings to try to capture the experience of the Ocean. These have taken weeks and are layered and repainted, and layered.
I stretched a new canvas, thinking I was going to start yet another attempt at capturing the lure of the Ocean,

Instead I drew on it, lightly. I love the Lascaux cave paintings and I am enamored with the concept of The Roebuck in the Thicket who calls one to leave the well trodden path and create a new one. This is explained in far more detail by Joseph Campbell and Robert Graves in "The White Goddess".

Normally I would start adding more paint, maybe some color, but there is something that is so beautiful to me about the simplicity of this piece.
I decided to try something new, and leave it as it is, a memory, a movement, something so light that it cannot be captured.

It is painted and drawn on canvas. I stretched and sized lightly with rabbit skin glue. I love the feel and look of raw canvas, so I added another layer of Gamblin PVA sizing.

www.melorawalters.com short film of me within my art : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsX0qNgT4Ug “When I paint it is not just creating a painting, it is the act of painting. It is transmitting a feeling into a canvas, the act of applying the paint, the movement, almost a ritual”. Walters is an American painter whose work explores the meaning of being alive. She is deeply interested in psychology and human experience, and explores these topics through varied media, including oil on canvas, enamel, analogue photography, sculpture and pencil. Her inspiration comes from philosophers and psychologists such as Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Marie Louise von Franz among other intellectuals. Walters addresses emotional themes with pared-down directness and intensity, often portraying ferocious animal archetypes and exploring mythological narratives. Her work been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin. “My original love and inspiration is the terrifying risk of being vulnerable. This is what guides me, what holds me, is mythology, Ancient history. Art. Nature, for if it is touched it is no longer wild. Mirrored by the organized chaos of the universe, the abyss, the dark void. Being and Nothingness. My dreams. My love.”
