In this from the ANGELS AND DEMONS series, I continue my homage to the Masters…Painters of the dramatic and ecstatic, Caravaggio, Raphael, Da Vinci, and in this case, Tiepolo. I choose and isolate details from their larger compositions, decontextualizing their subjects and freeing them of their time and circumstance. In doing they blossom anew in the imagination of the modern viewer. This piece is unusual in that it can hang horizontally, as shown, or vertically. In it's horizontal orientation, the negative space accentuates the sweeping in of the angel, the sense of flight and weightlessness. Turned 90 degrees clockwise and gravity takes hold...the sense of falling is acute and the urgency and the drama of the rescue heightened. It is painted in casein, an ancient paint comprised of pigment, water, and milk or soy protein applied using large soft boar bristle brushes on sized muslin which I prefer over canvas for it's tighter weave and finer thread. I've developed a technique creating a softness of effect and visual depth without thickness of paint, so the painting rolls for shipping and storage without chipping or cracking.

Artist Johniene Papandreas' dramatic, large-scale “details” zero in on the moments that escape conscious recognition to capture the fleeting expressions between expressions, the space between breaths. Her paintings are often inspired by past classical masterpieces, her “models” removed from their context and transformed… The expression of anonymous face in a Renaissance crowd reveals a hidden agenda… A jumble of fruit in a Dutch still life becomes a universe of jewel-like orbs orbiting a peach sun… A gesturing arm becomes a study in struggle, submission, and inevitable acceptance… “It is in the spaces between, in what you see when you are not “looking”, that wonder resides… the parallel universe of the visceral. Just below the surface of the familiar, even the mundane, are vistas of sensation awaiting discovery.” Johniene Papandreas
