About The Artwork

This work is a part of my collection "Faces that burned my heart" which includes the portraits of women from different places with different stories. I decided to paint this portrait after learning about the story of an Iranian woman, Sahar Khodayari, who set herself on fire. She was protesting a possible sentence of six months in prison for having tried to enter a public stadium to watch a football game. Iran guaranteed such entry for the first time after 40 years, one month after Sahar’s death. She has since become a symbol of protest against the Islamic Republic's oppression against women.
