ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Large original seascape oil painting. This colorful seascape with boats captures a view on Lake Michigan as a series of sailboats depart from the channel into the larger expanse of the lake. I was drawn to the beautiful architecture of the sails and the sense of determined direction I felt in viewing them. The historic red lighthouse on the right was also important to the visual story and composition. I created this beautiful painting after a visit to my sister who lives in Michigan. She has talked about the lake and it's beauty for a long time and I was happy to finally get there toward the end of the summer to witness what she has so frequently described. I was blown away with everything I saw from the water, to the sailing vessels and amazing sand dunes along the coast. In the absence of being able to painting from the boat I was in my camera took hold and I found myself snapping away trying to grab as much of the experience as I could with the hope of creating some paintings once I returned home to New Jersey. The photograph was taken in Holland Michigan at the south side of the Holland Channel which is part of Holland State Park. The body of the painting contains rich vibrant hues representative of the day and a slightly abstract quality in terms of my interpretation. Bold brushwork runs throughout the artwork and was critical in articulating the sense of movement I felt within the vista. This original painting was created on a 16"x 20" Ampersand (TM) panel that is signed and ready for framing. If you have any questions about this painting, please contact me.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
