Scream – morbo sacro/morbo diabolico It’s a work realized on natural silk, dedicated to those 1-2% of global population suffering by epilepsy; a lot of them are still stigmatized (in more than half of the world). Is dedicated also to all the famous artists and writers who suffered by this illness. I wanted to express in this painting an epileptic crisis and the drama that generate, fiscally and psychologically as time as stigmatization is coming out and damage the persons more than the illness itself. This is why a part of the title is “scream” – a scream of a double desperation: sufferance and stigmatization. Are expressed by the red stain which has a type of shadow meaning the “stigmata bonus”. Even if during antique time the illness was named “morbo sacrum” (=the person has divine visions) or was attributed to genius and intellectuals, after a while, before the Middle Eve already, the name changed to “morbo diabolico” (=the person is possessed by evil spirits); in order to not contact the ill the people were spiting on the epileptic person. Even to the end of 18th century , as the American medical historian Owsei Temkin notified, people were advised not to talk, bath or touch an epileptic because he could infect them by one breath only. It seems that the epilepsy is more frequent between creative people and artists and some researchers said that a big creativity could increase the possibility to develop this illness that still remain partially mysterious. *for all the paintings made on silk the final dimension can vary +/- 1-2 cm from what I wrote (for ex. 140x50cm could be 138x52cm) but each painting will receive a very precise notice about the final dimension and framing, which is very simple. You need a simple white frame (preferable with glass or plexiglass) and a piece of white cardboard. The silk, even if it's so soft and may seems delicate, actually is much more resistant in time than the paper or even linen or cotton.

"In this new series Vijoli remains faithful to her inquisitive nature, keeping up with her recent research and creating a new object, which indicates in its own particular way a radical reversal in the usual relationship between an audience and an artistic event: the portable painting. It is designed using the essential forms of an exclusive leather handbag, entirely handmade, which frames a little original painting. Each bag is a unique piece, exactly like the portable painting itself; and the bag too is not only carrying a painting, but its colours --both inside and outside-- are conceived in harmony with the chromatic structure of the painting itself. Through these special bags Vijoli is able to take --and not only virtually-- the picture off the ideal wall on which it traditionally hangs, in order to hand it directly over to collectors, and to create a chance to put her work in motion, while having it experienced in a more personal and perpetual way. Concepts like personality and uniqueness are the basis of these works and can be easily found in their meticulous craftsmanship, highlighting the relation between the artisanal skill and the innovative conception where the small, intentional imperfections are a clear example of that relationship. This is Vijoli's answer to an increasing request for unique, hand-crafted, non-serialised artefacts whereas she also creates an artistic object that automatically turns itself into a statement very likely to cause a stir both in the art and the fashion worlds." Portable paintings / Paolo Cappelletti "The symbolism of Elena Vijoli's works expresses itself through the contrast between a precise, minimal economy of the sign and a continuos research on technique and matter, which is put into concrete form by the use of materials such as stone, glass, leather and different types of metals. Vijoli's minimal sign and material redundancy are continuously counter chanting, and that gives her the possibility to find a proper harmony of the opposites: the lightness of the divine message emerges in the purest works such as "Lessons from God" or "Apocryphal Writings", while the irony and love for the heaviness of human things explode in works such as "Family" and "Brainstorming".
