About The Artwork
I created this on a discarded scrap of old lumber. The wood is rough and has holes and gnarls and damage from its previous life. I left the wood as I found it, and painted bands of flat acrylic ground that wrap around the sides of the wood. Within each colored band are several small oil paintings vaguely depicting abstract landscape imagery: sky, water, a cross-section of earth, night, sunlight, and dismal gray. I think of these paintings as a type of diary of my day or a glimpse into the "mentalscape" of my mind at any given moment. I apply the oil paint both thickly and very thinly so that it is transparent in some places. I also leave gaps around the shapes so that there is raw gesso showing through as a white line or shape that separates the color areas.

I create compartmentalized oil paintings on surfaces such as discarded wood scraps, prepared paper, or canvas. The paintings are what I call "mental landscapes" -- both evoking nature and an internal abstract world. I think of each compartment as a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger beyond the visible. The rows of painted segments represent time lapses, and may function sequentially like an abstract comic book. The segments often wrap around the surface, terminate unexpectedly and disappear. My studio is located on the dynamic Space Coast of Florida. I'm currently Professor of Art at Eastern Florida State College, where I teach Drawing, Painting, and Design.
