Inspired by the shadows on the rock cliff face at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. The morning was sunny and bright but the face was in shadow with erosive slits where the light shown through. The rock was striated in varied shades but the shadowed edges created a darker shadows.

A truly beautiful section of the US with millions of years of history documented in each level of the rock.

All edges are finished on this deep canvas with a hanging wire attached. The paint was manipulated with added mediums to create a matte paint and applied with a palette knife in varying levels of thickness. Oil sticks used to create the lines.

Part of The Shape of Things collection.

As a minimalist artist, I find inspiration in capturing the essence of Earth's organic elements through silhouettes and simplified shapes. I celebrate the inherent beauty of rock formations, flowers, and water, blending well-defined shapes with expansive negative spaces to create intriguing compositions. ~~ Bio Laura Welshans is a multi-media abstract artist residing in Little Rock, Arkansas.
