ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Oil pastels and cold wax on oil paper | 2019 In this series I'm exploring the concept of Silence. Living in a busy city like Barcelona, makes it almost impossible to find moments for enjoying silence. Silence is much more than the absence of noise. Silence is an opportunity to initiate a trip to your deepest self, a way of understanding your own nature. Oil pastel is a beautiful technique I'm learning on the go. On these works, I'm also using cold wax to provide a thin layer of color that combines perfectly with the oil. Oil pastels never dry, they just become hard over time. Oil gets absorbed by the fibers of the paper leaving a layer of pigment with less oil. The paper I used in these ones is specific for oil, which means that oil will absorb better than on other regular papers. For shipping I will ensure the painting is properly packed, but bear in mind that the cover paper may stick to the surface of the painting. Just remove it carefully :) For long term conservation, frame your painting behind a glass.

Cristina Castañeda (1977) is a self taught artist from Barcelona (Spain). She started painting and creating as a child, becoming her favorite games and entertainment. Specially during holidays in the family's country's side house, she would spend hours playing with charcoals, acrylics and building little monsters with the raw clay grabbed directly from the mountains. Maybe that's the main reason why she still loves playing with materials and creating textures on her paintings. On her most recent works, she focuses on combining the gestural language of improvisational expressionism with reductive abstraction.
