Skipper’ is an original oil painting on canvas. Size is 100 x 100cm. The canvas is 4cm deep. The painting is unframed with the edges painted a mid-tone blue/grey. The Peace Paintings are a collection of four paintings all inspired by JMW Turner’s painting, ‘Peace - Burial at Sea’. The Collection is rich, moody and deeply atmospheric. The paintings are united by a palette of Payne’s Grey, Ochre and Warm White with variations on warmth and darkness and richness through the additions of Raw Umber, Lemon Yellow, Prussian Blue and Ultramarine Violet. ‘Skipper’ is the painting with the most ‘golden glow’ and also has the darkest, blackest area out of all four paintings. Please see the close up images to see the golden light and how the subtle areas of violet make this vibrate and shimmer. As with all my paintings, the many rich layers of colour mean that the paintings gently change colour in different lights and at different times of day. You may wish to try a painting in different places to see how the light alters the balance of tones.

I like to say that I paint ‘The Edge of The Rainbow’. The term comes from Donna Tartt’s novel, The Goldfinch as she describes a space that sits just beyond reality, where all beauty, magic and art exists. My paintings are an attempt to conjure this space, to break through this reality and try and grasp what lies just beyond what we can see. Its a place that is blurry, shimmering and impossible to capture. In practice, I use layers and layers of thin, runny oil paint to create glowing glazes of colour that vibrate and change in the light. As I apply each translucent layer I like to imagine that light and air is caught within the painting, allowing it to breathe and come alive.
