Snow Painting

There is a great deal of activity in our minds that doesn’t occur in words. It is that processing of thought, emotion and experience which I seek to represent on my canvases. I’m fascinated by the layers and complexities of feeling that we all experience, so I create visual versions of them. Music is a necessary part of my process as it is another medium which reaches into this unspoken world. I apply colors and textures to canvases large enough to move about with freedom and yet small enough to still control the paint. If you feel drawn to the image I’ve created; if you find you want to closely inspect details and then move farther away to see the whole piece; if you feel invited to linger with the painting, my art has served its purpose. I feel most connected to artists like Monet and Matisse; Weimar artists like Emile Nolde, and Abstract Expressionists like De Kooning and Pollock, because they expressed a scene’s energy onto their canvases, rather than strict, realistic representations. I fell in love with oil painting as a student in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Since then, I have traveled extensively, including living eight years in Istanbul, Turkey.
