Snowdonia Welsh Mountains Painting

The dramatic mountains of Snowdonia near the slate mines of Llanberis in North Wales provide the subject matter for this piece. Thick buttery oil paint is roughly mixed and vigorously applied in slabs of sculptural heavy impasto using a palette knife in an Impressionist-Expressionist style onto a wood panel primed with dark grey gesso. This work is inspired by the Welsh painter Sir Kyffin Williams RA and the short slabby overlapping marks also remind of the abstract layered works of French-Russian Nicolas De Stijl. Slate greys and olive greens make up the limited palette with black taking a dominant role adding depth and weight to this powerful composition. The painting is signed on the front in paint at bottom right and signed, titled and dated 26 September 2016 on the reverse.
