About The Artwork

Southern Cross; painting from my series of works "Southern Cross" Nothing more than a concept situated on the other side of visible - the Southern Cross represented a point of reference for seafarers, traders, outlaws and explorers on the other side of the globe, an orientation mark, possible synonym for salvation. I have often asked myselfe: where dose the invisible reside? Where is the home of the imaginary or fictitious, conscious or sunken memories; does a world beyond me exist or better yet, does it even exist if i fo not observe it? I found some anwsers to these questions in Kant, already as a child, then Schopenhauer, physiology, perception, hypnagogic images, and what not, a few experiments and practice, and now everybody chants the Higgs Boson mantra the Island od the Day Before. The first vast night sky i remember is the one above Trieste, when a usual and unpretentiopus evening reveald itself in its entire magnificent splendor. The stars above as if lit by an invisible hand, shone and unforgettably flashed in same color as my, seemingly plastic Italian candy. My grandma and grandpa had a house near the mental institution. It was a time when electro-shock therapy was still approved, although at the sam time anti-psychiatry had its grand entrance. Doctor Franco Basaglia. Sometimes screams were heard from nearby. Sometimes these screams woke us during the night. The series "Southern Cross" consists of several paintings and polyptychs, oil on canvas of large format. These are minimalist, single-layer (dotted) geo-works painted on a monochrome surface whit mostly dominated light colors. The dotted grid on the paintings is a copy of a constallation (Crux, Lyra, Libra, Scorpius..). The dotted grid is set in coloristic contrast against the background of the painting. With the viewer, this creates a misleading perception; the so called complementary complex; the viewer has a psychological need for compensating the valance by creating a coloristic illusion, thus perceives the nonexistent dots. The viewer identifies circles in complementary colors; he sees that which does not exist.
