Spy Painting

One in a series of abstract botanicals, this piece is done in casein* paint on heavy, cold press watercolor paper. The underlying sketch is done in pencil and the painting is finished with a buffed cold wax varnish. Unframed. This series is inspired by Southern California exurban landscaping. I use the shapes and forms as vehicles for color play and to explore the byzantine tangle of Italo-Cali, ancient-and-modern influences on my art. *Casein paint is derived from milk protein, can be brittle (thus the heavy, rigid watercolor paper) and so the painting cannot be bent, folded, or rolled. I’ve had other similar pieces nicely framed using a float mount technique under glass. (This painting is unframed.)
