ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece was inspired by memories of the mysterious standing stones at Stanton Drew, near my home city of Bristol in England. The stones have a palpable presence, a rich, quiet power you can really tap into. Tucked away in a mist covered field, far from any major road, they are a well kept secret, drenched in history and saturated with a mystical beauty. My painting doesn't attempt to realistically depict the exact positions and shapes of the stones, but tries to capture something of the emotional and spiritual quality I experienced from being there. I chose to use watercolour because, as the reknowned artist Ken Kiff says, it is a "transformative" medium, which does what it wants. As he said, it's very hard to do "a dead imitation of a subject" in watercolour - the medium is too alive for that!

I like to paint the world I observe around me; illustrating little remembered moments from everyday life and some of the unexpected flashes of beauty which touch me. Much of my work is inspired by the glory of nature, and some of it is more narrative based. I live in Britain, in the city of Bristol. I recently completed a masters in 'Authorial Illustration' at Falmouth University in Cornwall, with Distinction. In 1999 I graduated with a first class BA Hons degree in Fine Art and English Lit. from Exeter University, and since then I've worked as an artist, an art teacher, a gardener, and a youth and community worker. I'm passionate about colour, and love exploring the translucent, vibrant, unpredictable qualities of watercolour. I'm interested in the inner psychic journey as much as the outer world.
